That brings me to today’s investor highlight. I have been in the technology world for a long time. In my day to day job I am an educational technology consultant, supporting schools and educators in using technology with students. One thing that I tell educators and I think this holds true for everyone is to be thinking…..do I feel like I work for technology, or does technology work for me? If you feel like you are constantly frustrated by technology then it probably means one of two things. 1) You need a system in place to support you in using the technology or 2) It’s the wrong technology. Oftentimes I find we have the right technology but we don’t put systems into place to make it work seamlessly. Next thing you know you’re spending hours on something that was supposed to save you time and energy. 

There is all sorts of technology to support us in our real estate investing journey. I thought I would highlight some of my favorite tools that I use on a daily basis. 

1. Google Workspace for Business….full disclosure I have been a fan of the Google platform for a very long time and am a Google Certified Trainer. I find that their tools, whether it be a form, their spreadsheets, or their email (Gmail) it’s just a very powerful system when you set it up to work for you. If you or your office is a Google Workspace business and you could use some training feel free to reach out….it’s what I do. 
2. Stessa.com I really like stessa and as a free service for me to manage all my properties, see my finances all in one place I think it’s as good as it gets and is getting better. Quickbooks is so expensive and isn’t real estate focused. Stessa.com is for real estate investors. It does one thing and does it well and at Free…the price is right as well. 
3. The Marco Polo app on phones. This one I have to give credit to our contractor for. When we hired him he wanted to use the app to communicate and seeing that we live across the state from our rentals he’s working on it was perfect. When he has questions about something he can actually show us what he’s talking about, we can see the problem and then come up with a game plan to solve it. Such a great way to communicate when video is needed. Free and simple to use

His wife and he pastored a small church in West Central Spokane for 10 years. It was a rich and rewarding life and had lots of fruit and we will always look back on those years with pleasure and enjoyment. However, he would say he worked beyond what was healthy.

When they closed the church he realized he had lived with high stress, fatigue and burn out the whole time. Alec had it in his mind to do something to help pastors who wanted to live out the dream of life in ministry but now suffer from the fatigue and functioning burn out. 

Coaching the Redline was his effort to help. Alec also was somewhat embedded in the real estate community in Spokane because of having been in the trades (electrician) and subsequently helping two friends flip a couple of properties. He thinks and understands the lifestyle and unique struggles of the real estate investor.  

What Alec has come to realize is, pastors and real estate investors have a lot in common. Long work weeks, never ending stress, and a kind of aloneness that all creates a similar high stress and burn out.

Our Instagram says we “flip” but we aren’t a business and we don’t do your stereotypical flips… and we’re slow so I guess we can barely call ourselves flippers. We both work and home remodel just kind of started as a hobby that we did on our days off. We do about 1 (sometimes 2) houses a year. They are our primary properties and we live in them with our cats during the majority of the renovations. Our goal has never been to buy a house for super cheap, put as little into it as possible, use cheap materials and do a really generic remodel. In fact, stuff like that drives us crazy. When we buy a house to renovate, our goal is to always take this overlooked, run down house and turn it into someone’s forever home. We work really hard to embrace the personality of the house and make sure that we are putting quality, long lasting materials into our homes. It’s just a perk that we get to make money while giving new life to a property.
